Fostering Creativity and Growth: Fuse Project Brings After School Art to Calloway-Smith Middle School

Art programs are often the heart of self-expression, confidence building, and emotional growth for students, particularly in under-resourced schools. Recognizing the transformative power of the arts, Fuse Project has partnered with Mobile Arts Council through their Amp Up Arts education programming to launch our new After-School Art at Calloway-Smith Middle School. This program fills a critical gap, as the school currently offers only Band and PE as electives during the school day.

This collaborative program, led by the talented Cherrelle Smith (known affectionately by her students as Mrs. Cee Cee), creates a safe and vibrant space where middle schoolers can explore their creativity. Mrs. Cee Cee connects with the students through engaging activities that blend art techniques with social-emotional learning. Check out her art on Instagram at @sistahjujuemporium.

Building Connections Through Art

Each week, the program welcomes 24 students in split groups of 12, who first attend an hour of tutoring before diving into an hour of hands-on art projects. Over a three-week rotation period, it touches the lives of 70 students, fostering personal connections and creative expression.

The first activity, rainbow scratch art, was more than just a fun exercise—it became a way for students to share about themselves. In small groups, they discussed their favorite foods, hobbies, and aspirations, learning about one another and breaking the ice with doodles and stencils. The overarching message was clear: there are no mistakes in art. This simple yet powerful idea encourages students to let go of perfectionism, build confidence, and enjoy the creative process.

The enthusiasm for this program was palpable, with students eagerly brainstorming interest in future projects like clay sculpting, painting, sneaker design, graffiti art, and stained glass.

Unlocking Potential Through Art Education

Art programs are a lifeline for students in under-resourced schools. When electives are limited, students often lack creative outlets to explore their interests and process their emotions. At this critical middle school age, when students are navigating social pressures and identity development, providing an avenue for self-expression is essential.

Art bridges the gap between academics and emotional well-being. It teaches patience, critical thinking, and problem-solving, while also serving as an outlet for emotions that might otherwise go unspoken. This initiative in partnership with Calloway-Smith is particularly impactful because it pairs art with tutoring, addressing both academic and emotional needs.

This program also highlights the importance of social-emotional learning (SEL)—a cornerstone of a well-rounded education. SEL activities, like those included in the art class, teach students to recognize and manage their emotions, build empathy, and develop positive relationships.

Creative Highlights

Our recent activities demonstrated the power of art to inspire and teach. Students explored the concept of primary colors and how they blend to create the full spectrum of the rainbow. This hands-on project involved painting pumpkins, with creations ranging from unicorns to Angry Bird designs. Even Ann-Brooks Morrissette, Fuse Project’s Executive Director, joined the fun, sharing her drawing skills to help students perfect their designs. This supportive and engaging environment has allowed students to bond with one another and with their teacher, fostering a sense of community and belonging.
